When is too much too much?

One of the things that makes life bearable is irony. No matter what you’re doing, the mismatch can hit you and the smile comes. Even when the world seems really dark, that smile brings a ray of hope. So look at erectile dysfunction. Not the most amusing of subjects. There you are, in exactly the right situation with a woman you find really attractive and then nothing happens. Or having started well, your interest dies away unexpectedly. Talk about humiliation and embarrassment!

OK, so you do your research and Cialis is going to be the answer to all your problems. When you open the pack, you look at the warnings of side effects and there it is. The wording usually runs along the lines, “If you experience an erection lasting more than four hours, call a doctor.” (and as many nurses as can spare the time to come). What’s the story? How can too much success be a medical emergency?

Well, normally, an erection is a response to sexual stimulation and, when the stimulation goes away, so does the erection. If your erection persists when there is no sexual stimulation, this is called priapism. The longer it lasts, the more painful it becomes. If it’s not treated, it can result in permanent impotence.

So how common is it? Relax! It’s extremely rare, affecting just one or two men per million acts of sexual intercourse. That’s right. Whether it occurs has nothing to do with taking medication. It’s just a coincidence that the particular erection happens to be caused by a tablet. The real problem is usually connected with blood disorders such as leukemia or physical injuries to the penis itself or the spinal cord. It can also come as a side effect to use of trazadone, one of the antidepressants. Hundreds of thousands of men all around the world take Cialis or one of the other drugs every day and everything works as it should. The FDA collect statistics (it’s hard work, but someone’s got to do it). Hospitals all around the U.S. report adverse events. In 2007, there were sixteen cases in which men using Cialis suffered an episode of priapism. After treatment, all recovered and have functioned normally since (even continuing to use Cialis). So the only time you need to worry about this remote chance is if you have a blood disorder or a physical injury. Other than that, just go ahead and enjoy the sex without worrying.
