Beware of mixing Cialis with Grapefruit juice
This problem is not limited to Cialis. Do not be deceived by the fact that most people can eat the fruit or drink the juice without a problem. It can be dangerous to continue eating or drinking grapefruit if you start any course of medication. This warning is particularly important because along with other naturally occurring foods like garlic, grapefruit is promoted as having beneficial effects on human health. The newly ambitious neutraceutical industries for natural foods and supplements assert that grapefruit contains compounds that can reduce the risk of the arteries hardening. Some go so far as to claim that grapefruit can help to prevent cancer. Unfortunately, there is no real scientific evidence for these claims. Worse, there is clinical evidence that compounds in grapefruit juice can adversely interact with a number of drugs on the market.
Specifically, when inside the small intestine, grapefruit juice blocks the action of natural enzymes whose function is to slow or prevent the absorption of the active elements in some medications into the blood stream. This allows a greater proportion of any drug such as Cialis to pass into the body. When manufacturers recommend the safe dosage for their drugs, they take the action of these enzymes into account. By drinking grapefruit juice and then taking the drug, you may actually overdose on the medication, which is dangerous and potentially toxic. Thus, if you are in the habit of taking a grapefruit juice with your breakfast, and you also take your first medications of the day including Cialis at that time, you should see your doctor to make sure that there are no problems. Until you get this advice, you should not change your consumption of grapefruit. Your doctor will want to examine you given your current diet.
