Research: effectiveness and safety of Cialis
STUDY OBJECTIVE:
To analyse the effectiveness and safety of Cialis for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
DESIGN:
This was a double-blind randomised study with a placebo control.
PATIENTS:
1,112 men in the age range 22 to 82, all suffering from varying degrees of dysfunction arising from a number of different causes.
INTERVENTIONS:
The drug or placebo was taken at fixed daily doses of 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg or 20mg over a period of twelve weeks. No particular food or alcohol restrictions were imposed.
RESULTS:
The results were analysed using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) and the Sexual Encounter Profile. As compared to the placebo, Cialis was able to offer a significant level of improvement against all measures. Those who took higher doses experienced an average improvement of 7.9 on IIEF, with three-quarters of those attempting sexual intercourse being able to successfully complete. Cialis was rated as consistently effective regardless of the underlying cause of the dysfunction and irrespective of age. In general, the patients reported few side-effect with headache and a mildly upset stomach being the most common.
CONCLUSIONS:
Cialis was found to be effective with few side-effects.
